Te Puke Primary School
Titled Puawānanga after the Clematis flower, also known as the flower of learning, this mural is located at the heart of our community at the Cameron Road entrance to Te Puke Primary School .
The design weaves together symbols of culture, diversity, and the values taught within the school. A tukutuku pattern, inspired by the one seen inside Hei Marae, flows through the sky, while a Waharoa forms a symbolic entrance to the school. After consultation with local iwi, the Otawa Ranges were chosen as the mural’s grounding feature, honouring the region and anchoring it in the students' pepeha. Native Indian butterflies and a traditional Pacific pattern adorning the Waharoa celebrate the cultural richness of the school community. Puawānanga flowers surround Pīwakawaka birds, symbols of learning, joy and curiosity that reflect the school's core values.
This mural was a collaborative effort. Designed and painted by myself, the 40-square-metre container was brought to life with input from many hands and hearts: Principal Andrea Dance, members of the school board, representatives from Waitaha Iwi, and selected students who shared their ideas.
And of course, this project would not have been possible without the generous support of Creative Bay of Plenty - Te Waka Auaha Toi, TECT, the Creative Communities Scheme, and the incredible fundraising efforts of Te Puke Primary. Thank you for making this mural project a reality!
