Pillans Point School - Landmarks Mural
It was such a beautiful experience painting this mural for Pillans Point School. The mural serves as a wayfinding map of the Tauranga area to support the school's local curriculum. Plus it adds a little extra colour and vibrancy!
This mural honours and reflects a shared history with tamariki at Pillans Point School, closely tied to Ngāi Tamarāwaho of Huria Marae. Included are elements like the Kōpūrererua Stream, Motuopae Island, and Waikareao Estuary, all part of the whakapapa of Ngāi Tamarāwaho. The prow of the waka represents the Tākitimu waka, the first to bring people to Tauranga Moana.
Also depicted are the early interactions between Pākehā and Māori, with Alfred and Charlotte Brown at Te Papa - The Elms, and the Pillans family, who were the first Pākehā to settle near the school. Myres Homestead is a nod to this history.
Throughout the mural, you’ll find details like kōwhaiwhai, the anchor stone, and Otumoetai Pā, all of which tamariki at Pillans Point School will learn about as they explore their own history throughout their schooling journey.
As for the flora and fauna I chose to incorporate, you'll see native mānuka, kawakawa, kōwhai, tūi birds, and The Elms oak tree.
Thanks to all the staff and students at Pillans Point School for having me, and to everyone who voted for this project in the Tauranga Crossing Local Legends Grant!
