Bellevue School

The Bellevue School mural was a true collaboration. In the weeks leading up to the installation, I met with staff and Mana Whenua to gain a deep understanding of the school’s story, history, culture, and land. Students also shared their ideas and visions for the artwork, helping shape a design that holds real meaning for the Bellevue School community.

At the centre of the mural, the Tūī stands as kaitiaki (guardian) of the area — a symbol of protection and connection. Along the edges, Pīwakawaka birds flutter playfully, reflecting a common theme in student feedback about what they hoped to see in their mural.

Mauao (Mount Maunganui), visible from the school grounds, anchors the mural in its local landscape, while a geometric pattern in the sky, inspired by the Pātiki, represents hospitality and warmth.

Pōhutukawa trees, which stand proudly in front of the school hall and feature across Bellevue’s branding, also weave through the mural design, connecting the artwork to the school’s identity and environment.

I loved seeing students light up as they recognised their Rākau — their tree and house — within the mural. It was a joy to bring their ideas to life and to wrap the artwork around to the front of the hall with painted Pōhutukawa and native birds, a beautiful suggestion from Principal Anna.

Thank you to Bellevue School for trusting me to bring your mural to life.
