Tapuerau - Pillans Point School
I had the honour of painting a mural at Pillans Point School, capturing the rich history and significance of the land for our community, Iwi, staff, and students—both now and for the future. My inspiration came from the stories of the land and moana gardens shared by Matua Des of Ngāi Tamarāwaho.
One of my favourite moments during this project was when a group of students and their parents played a game of "I Spy" with the mural—spotting everything from Flounder to Tūī, Mauao, Pohutukawa, and Kumara. It was amazing to see their engagement and to reflect on the mural's meaningful connection to our shared history.
I’m deeply grateful for the chance to bring such a significant story to life.
Mural titled 'Tapuerau', meaning 'an important area of vast garden'.
Kōwhaiwhai pattern in the sky is the Pūwhenua design, distinct to Ngāti Ranginui and Tākitimu Waka.
